Presidential Note

Goedemorgen Zonnestraaltjes, Good morning Sunrays,

Welcome to another presidential note. Normally I would bring up a weird topic or an interesting story to entertain you. This time, in light of recent events, will be a little different. I am not a medical expert so I cannot give you any advice about this, however I have more experience in organising events and entertaining people. Therefore, I can suggest some ideas in this sense.

During this time, it can be hard to keep yourself busy and entertained. Netflix only has so many series that you enjoy and playing games becomes boring too after a couple of days. Sporting is barely possible and many activities with your favourite associations are cancelled. This can make you feel bored or even lonely sometimes. As the king of The Netherlands mentioned there is another virus, the ‘loneliness virus’. This of course is a little weird metaphor as a virus spreads with contact between people and loneliness usually disappears due to this. However, on one hand the king is right as there is a degree of loneliness caused by the coronavirus.

Most of the time, loneliness is associated with the elderly sitting in their own house without a lot of contact. However, as a student it is possible to feel lonely too, especially during these times. If you live in a house with many other students, there are many things to do with your housemates. Some houses live by the up-high down-low lifestyle, where they party with their housemates on one day (up high) and are hungover and lazy the next day (down low). This can be a good way to both get into some kind of rhythm while having some fun. Other houses have started playing games together with their house, which can be a great way to entertain yourself. There is nothing more fun than amassing lots of money in a game of monopoly while your housemates are pathetically selling their assets to the bank.

If you live in a small house or on your own it is logically not possible to do many things with your housemates, however there are still plenty of things you can do. Of course, studying is one of them. While not very fun, it can give yourself a sense of pride and accomplishment. Another is to start gaming with some friends. Games like Civilization, Rocket league and borderlands are lots of fun to play with a group of people. It is always possible to ask in the Scintilla discord if anyone wants to join in a game or just to chat up. All in all, there are still some things to do while in your own house.

While these times may be weird and something you have not experienced before do not forget that it will pass like any other time. I will be looking forward to seeing many of you again hopefully soon and hope you will pass the upcoming time in full health, both physically and mentally.

Dames en Heren, op de koningin, op Scintilla!
